Jerez Typical Spanish...... or maybe not.: 2. - Sherry & Brandy de Jerez cellars. It was a profitable business and it will be in the future for sure.

Jerez is today the city that is, due to the SHERRY & BRANDY business, mainly during the XIX and XX centuries.

Visitors to Jerez should make a least a tour for one of the famous Sherry & Brandy de Jerez cellars open to the tourists. There are different offers, some of them shown art collections as Bodegas Tradicion with a reputable collection of paintings, Bodegas Real Tesoro with a collection of Picasso drawings, or Garvey with a collection of old labels. Besides, apart from the most popular and visited cellars as Tio Pepe (Gonzalez Byass) or Pedro Domecq (Fundador), there are other very interesting and recommendable bodegas as Lustau, Williams-Humbert, Sandeman, Diez-Merito or Maestro Sierra. In others towns of the area and belogns to the SHERRY and BRANDY DE JEREZ councils, there are interesting cellars open to visitors as Osborne, Caballero and Terry located in El Puerto de Santa Maria and Antonio Barbadillo, Argüeso and La Gitana in Sanlucar de Barrameda.

Besides, there are some wineries in the area specialized in producing red and white table wines of recognized high quality as Luis Perez and Entrechuelos in Jerez, Antonio Barbadillo in Sanlucar or Huerta de Albala in Arcos.

Specially interesting is the visit to Sanchez Romate, the producers of the well recognized CARDENAL MENDOZA brandy, but should be previously appointed. (http://www.romate.com/)

Many visitors are suprised during their tour because when they arrive to the tasting area, they find four sherry casks sighned by each member of the famous pop/rock group THE BEATLES. In fact they have never been in Jerez, but when they came to Spain in July of 1965 to play a concert in Madrid, at the reception in Gran Melia hotel, they toasted with a glass of sherry and signed the casks, Williams & Humbert has preserved them, as a precious treasure, since that date.
